This session will breakdown the Building Safety Act 2022 and help you makes sense of the changes to the legislation

The Law Society’s Property Conveyancing Convention took place on 18th June 2024 and the first session of the day focused on the Building Safety Act 2022.

The Building Safety Act is very broad in scope and covers the whole lifecycle of building safety.

A pre-event survey was sent to all delegates registered to understand priority areas and further support needed on this topic. This assisted the speakers in selecting their topics for the session and they focused on key areas that have created some concerns:

  1. Certification (Leaseholder Deeds of Certification and Landlords Certificates) and the mandatory information required from leaseholders and current landlords.
  2. The changes made to the Building Safety Act 2022 by the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024.

Our expert speakers discussed what the new Act means for you in practice, which parts of the proposals have made it into the legislation and what remains outstanding. This was the last Bill to become an Act in the last parliament – so it was enacted on 24 May 2024.

Speakers included:

  • Chair: Diane Latter - Policy adviser – Property, The Law Society
  • Andrew Butler KC, Tanfield Chambers and editor of the Law Society Book entitled “Building Safety Act 2022 in Practice: A guide for property lawyers.”
  • Fiona Cudworth-Elks, Senior Policy Advisor, Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC)
