Member Talk: Climate Risk for Property Solicitors: The Climate Change Practice Note

Climate2

A changing climate increases risks for property owners. Our Talk explains the advice solicitors must give their clients when purchasing.

The UK has started to see the real impact of climate change with increases in wildfires, coastal erosion, heat stress and flooding.

All of these events can have enormous implications for home and commercial property owners, both in terms of the building but also the surrounding infrastructure.

In May 2025 The Law Society launched its Climate Change Practice Note to help solicitors understand how they should be advising their clients on property related climate risk.

Our speakers will cover:

  • the risk climate change poses to UK properties

  • why the practice note is needed

  • the risks that solicitors and their clients need to be aware of

  • what you need to think about when advising clients

  • what climate searches mean for the property practitioner

  • how much knowledge of climate the property solicitor needs

Speakers:

  • Alasdair Cameron, Policy Adviser for climate change, planning and environmental law, Law Society
  • Stephen Sykes, Director, GeoData Labs and practising solicitor specialising in environmental support to real estate lawyers and clients.
