  • Cambodia: Ny Chakrya - HRD at risk

    The Law Society is concerned for Ny Chakrya, a prominent human rights defender in Cambodia who was summoned to Phnom Penh Municipal Court by the Investigating Judge on 21st October 2015 at 9am. Any failure to appear Court on said date, would have resulted in the Court issuing an arrest warrant for him. Read intervention attached.

  • Tajikistan: Mr Buzurghmehr Yorov- lawyer at risk

    The Law Society would like to express its deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of Mr Buzurgmehr Yorov, a civil and criminal lawyer and Chairman of the Bar Association of Dushanbe. The Law Society notes that Mr Yorov was representing 13 members of the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) at the time of his arrest.    Read full intervention attached

  • Thailand - Mr Srisuwan Janya – Lawyer at Risk

    The Law Society has expressed concern regarding the continued enforced disappearance of Mr. Khalil Ma’touq a human rights lawyer and the director of the Syrian Centre for Legal Studies and Research known for his defence of political prisoners.   Read intervention attached.

  • Argentina: Death of human rights defender – Diana Sacayán

    It has come to our attention that human rights defender, Diana Sacayán was found dead at her apartment in Buenos Aires on 13 October 2015. We are aware that Diana Sacayán was a renowned defender of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights and that she sat on the executive board of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association, an organisation promoting equality regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex. 

  • Turkey: Tahir Elci - Lawyer at Risk

    The Law Society is concerned about the arrest and detention on 20 October 2015 of Mr Tahir Elci. Mr Elci is a Turkish Lawyer and a prominent human rights lawyer practising in Diyarbakir in South East Turkey.  He is also the President of the Diyarbakir Bar Association.   Read full intervention attached

  • Iran: Narges Mohammadi – Human Rights Defender at Risk

    The Law Society is deeply concerned for the life of Narges Mohammadi, the deputy director and spokesperson for the Center for the Defenders of Human Rights, an organization that was founded by human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi in 2001 and that offers pro-bono legal services to political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, supporting their families and reporting regularly on the human rights situation in Iran.     Read full intervention attached.

  • Bahrain: Mr. Maytham Al Salman - human rights defender at risk

    The Law Society is gravely concerned over the arrest, detention and travel ban imposed on human rights defender Sheikh Dr Maytham Al Salman, the Head of the Religious Freedom Unit of Bahrain Human Rights Observatory and adviser to Columbia University’s Global Freedom of Expression programme. He is known for his engagement with UN human rights mechanisms and for promoting peaceful inter-faith dialogue, freedom of expression and countering incitement to violence and discrimination.
