Growth image

Discover practical ways to build relationships, identify opportunities and develop business without compromising your role as a trusted adviser.

Coming Soon

This 20-minute Member Talk explores how legal professionals can approach business development as a natural extension of relationship-building, rather than simply “selling”. The speakers will share practical insights and experiences on how to develop professional networks, strengthen existing client relationships and recognise opportunities to generate new work.

This session is designed for partners, managing partners, COLPs, COFAs, compliance professionals, practice managers and anyone with responsibility for managing risk or leading a law firm.

The discussion will explore five key areas:

  • Rethinking business development: Moving beyond a transactional approach and understanding how strong relationships, trust and expertise can support business development.
  • Identifying opportunities: Recognising opportunities within existing client relationships and networks, understanding client challenges and using active listening to identify where additional support may be needed.
  • Building a strong professional network: Developing meaningful relationships, staying visible and relevant, and making effective use of professional events, LinkedIn and other networks.
  • Having better business development conversations: Asking the right questions, talking about expertise without making the conversation feel like a sales pitch, and having the confidence to explore potential opportunities.
  • Creating a simple personal BD plan: Using a practical framework – Identify → Connect → Engage → Add Value → Follow Up – to incorporate business development into day-to-day professional activity.

Speakers

  • Chair:: James Brown, Managing Partner, Hall Brown Family Law
  • Melinda Giles Partner at Fisher Jones Greenwood
  • Victoria Moffatt, Founder & Managing Director, LexRex
