Why your firm should take part
The Financial Benchmarking Survey is one of the largest surveys of financial performance across the legal sector. It provides insight into how firms allocate resources, manage costs and invest in growth, allowing you to benchmark your performance against your peers and identify opportunities to improve.
By taking part, you’ll receive:
- a free personalised benchmarking report showing how your firm’s profitability, employment costs and key financial metrics compare with similar firms
- a copy of the full survey results, providing valuable market intelligence and sector-wide insight
- an exclusive invitation to the launch event, where the findings will be presented and discussed.
Written and produced by Ian Johnson, Partner in the legal team at Hazlewoods LLP, the survey is widely recognised as the annual financial health check for law firms.
What you need
Most of the information required can be sourced from your firm’s professional indemnity insurance renewal forms and annual accounts. Draft figures can also be submitted where appropriate.
Our quick help guide explains where to find the key information you need and what can and cannot be submitted as draft figures.
Your answers are strictly confidential.
Please note that there should be one submission per firm.
How you can use your report
Your personalised report can provide an evidence base for monitoring your firm’s financial performance, controlling costs and supporting partner discussions around profitability and expenditure.
The findings can help inform discussions about:
- fees and hourly charge-out rates
- fee-earner performance
- departmental analysis and review meetings
- business trends and financial performance
- benchmarking against firms outside your usual local networks
- fee-earner and support staff distribution
- working capital, debtor days and total lock-up
- budget setting and marketing spend
- salaries and people costs
- pricing, resourcing, gearing and expenditure.
The survey closes on Friday 30 October 2026.
