The Ministry of Justice is undertaking a call for evidence on how government can support and strengthen the openness, transparency, and the accessibility of the court and tribunal services in the modern age.

The evidence submitted will be used to inform future policy and service design in these areas.

We welcome funding provided to charities and legal advice centres in civil and family legal disputes. There must be proper investment in the whole legal aid system to provide effective access to justice.

It is the first public evaluation of open justice since 2012 and covers a broad range of open justice issues:

  • listings
  • accessing courts and tribunals
  • remote observation and livestreaming
  • broadcasting
  • single Justice Procedure
  • publication of judgments and sentencing remarks
  • access to court documents and information
  • data access and reuse
  • public legal education

The consultation will close on 7 September 2023.
