The Graham Turnbull Memorial Fund (GTMF), a UK registered charity (Number 1082393), is governed by a Board of Trustees, who oversee the strategy of the charity and ensure compliance with UK charity regulations. All trustees are unpaid volunteers. The Board meets at least three times a year, including the Graham Turnbull Essay Competition Awards Ceremony and the Annual General Meeting.

The GTMF’s charitable objectives are

 “The Promotion Of Education For The Public Benefit And In Particular (But Without Limitation) Education In Human Rights And Humanitarian Law By Providing An Annual Essay Prize In Memory Of Graham Turnbull”

In furtherance of these objects the Trustees ensure the organisation of the annual Graham Turnbull Essay Competition by the Law Society of England and Wales, for law Students and young lawyers in or from England and Wales on a topical international human rights issue.

The Trustees also offer an annual travel award of £500 enabling a young lawyer to engage in a project supporting the promotion and protection of human rights internationally. The recipient provides a report on his/her activities to the Trustees. 

The GTMF wishes to appoint two new Trustees. Applicants must have a demonstrable commitment to the rule of law, access to justice and the defence of human rights and agree to the charitable aims and objectives of the GTMF. Experience of being a charitable Trustee and of international projects is desirable.

It is envisaged that one of the new Trustees will have fundraising experience. This role requires someone who will:

  • Devise a fundraising strategy for the charity
  • Liaise with other Trustees on the preparation of applications for grant funding
  • Investigate the possibility of organising fundraising events
  • Meet with potential funders
  • Report to the Board of Trustees on fundraising

The successful candidate will have experience of fundraising for charities. They should have an understanding of the situation of human rights and a commitment to volunteering.
