The Law Society of England and Wales President Robert Bournes has expressed his shock and sadness after hearing of the deaths and injuries caused by the recent attack on the Mardan courts in Pakistan’s Khyber PakhtunKhwa region.
President Bournes has written to the Chairman of the Khyber PakhtunKhwa Bar Council Abdul Latif Yousafzai on behalf of the Law Society and of the solicitor profession to express their deepest sympathy with the families, friends and colleagues of the members of the Pakistan legal profession who have lost their lifes or been injured in these events.
The attack occured on Friday 2 September and claimed the lives of at least 13 people, including five lawyers and two policemen.
The Law Society of England and Wales strongly condemns attacks on or threats to members of the legal profession for carrying out their professional duties. The independence of the justice system and the legal profession is integral to upholding the rule of law.
