The Law Society’s Planning and Environmental Law Committee recently responded to the government’s consultation on proposed changes to national planning policy. Those changes focus on:

  • broadening the definition of affordable housing to include ‘starter homes’
  • increasing residential density around commuter hubs
  • supporting new settlements, brownfield and small-site development, and expeditious delivery of housing allocated in local plans

The Society’s response drew on members’ experience around development planning, planning applications and appeals, and highlighted concerns around the robustness of some of the proposed changes to legal challenge.
