The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 (SI 2015/596) (GPDO) came into force today, 15 April 2015. The order consolidates the various changes made to the GPDO 1995 and makes further amendments.
Some of the key changes include:
- an extension of the expiry of the existing time-limited permitted development right for larger home extensions to 30 May 2019;
- permitted development rights for extensions to non-domestic premises becoming permanent;
- new permitted development rights for changes of use; and
- the conversion of premises used for storage or as a distribution centre to dwellinghouses.
The government’s aim in introducing these new permitted development rights is to broaden the opportunity for vacant premises to develop and bring diversity to retail areas.
