On 29 May 2020, the Law Society released guidance specifically for conveyancers, to accompany the pan-industry guidance: Re-opening the Home Moving Market Safely.

The sector-specific guidance gives conveyancers information to enable sales and purchases to be carried out while maintaining safety as social distancing measures are eased or increased in line with government guidance.

The document has been developed collaboratively by the residential conveyancing sector and their professional and membership organisations. It applies to:

  • owner-occupied homes
  • second hand homes, rather than new-build.

The guidance applies differently in England and Wales.

A working group of conveyancing organisations, including the Law Society, the Society of Licensed Conveyancers and CILEx, has also drafted a clause to help firms agree contract terms with the aim of enabling completion dates to be deferred more easily if completion needs to be delayed because of coronavirus (COVID-19).
