HMRC is proposing to cut the stamp duty land tax (SDLT) payment window from 30 days to 14 days, and merge the filing and payment systems into one. The consultation closes 7 October.

Payment would be taken by a single direct debit, with cheques only used in exceptional circumstances.

The proposals would not come into force until 1 January 2018 at the earliest, and would make it mandatory for agents to submit online, with the possibility of penalties where they fail to do so.
