The Immigration Act 2014 introduces a requirement on banks and building societies to run a status check on anyone wishing to open an account, including an attorney opening an account on the donor’s behalf, or an attorney who is being added as a signatory to the donor’s account. The change comes into force on 12 December 2014.

Due to the nature of the status checks, an attorney’s personal details must be used to perform the check. This will also be the case for professional attorneys – the check will be run against their personal details, including their address, and not their business details.

If you act as an attorney for a client in your professional capacity, you should be aware of these new requirements.
