On 8 March, we welcomed a delegation of four lawyers from Fiji who were accompanied by representatives of the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT). This was a capacity building visit and was the first from the country. The delegation included:
Ms Seema Pravina Chand, Lawyer at the Attorney General’s Office and representative of the Solicitor General
Mr Shahin Rafique Ali, Board Secretary of the Legal Aid Commission
Ms Laurel Vaurasi, Fiji Law Society
Mr Roopesh Singh, Fiji Law Society
Mr. Romain Zappella, APT Fundraising Officer and
Mr. Michael Kellett, APT Board Member.
The purpose of the visit was for the delegation to get an in-depth view of the operations of the Law Society of England and Wales, to examine our civil and criminal legal aid policies, to hear firsthand from our Chair of the Criminal Aid Committee, Avtar Bhatoa about how these policies work in practice and share with us the development of their legal profession and any potential challenges that solicitors in their jurisdiction face. It was an interesting morning, full of discussion and questions from both sides.
