The Malaysian legal services market is now officially open to foreign lawyers and law firms. 

The Malaysian Attorney General announced that the Legal Profession (Amendment) Act 2012 and additional amendments came into effect on 3 June 2014.

Simultaneously, the Malaysian Bar Council introduced the Legal Profession Rules 2014 and issued Guidance Notes for law firms and lawyers who are interested in applying for the three licenses available under the newly liberalised regulatory regime:

  • Qualified Foreign Law Firm
  • International Partnership 
  • Malaysian Law Firm to Employ Foreign Lawyer

The Law Society of England and Wales has been involved in Malaysia’s liberalisation process from an early stage.

It has worked closely with the Malaysian Bar Council and other domestic and international legal stakeholders by providing advice and insights based on our own liberalisation experience.

Most recently, the Law Society and Malaysian Bar Council co-hosted a Joint Forum on Liberalisation of the Malaysian Legal Profession on the 7th of March 2014
