Attacks against lawyers and human rights defenders in Egypt have increased, with at least 20 arrests having been made since the Law Society and TIMEP submitted a joint stakeholder report on Egypt in 2019.

On 12 March 2020 the Law Society, together with Lawyers for Lawyers, the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, and The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP), delivered a joint oral statement before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. The statement welcomes Egypt’s acceptance of certain recommendations made during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process regarding human rights defenders. The Law Society and our partners also express the hope that these recommendations will be duly implemented by Egypt.
