The Law Society sent a letter to Turkish authorities urging them to discontinue proceedings against lawyer Veysel Ok.

Veysel Ok has defended dozens of journalists in Turkey who have been prosecuted for their work. In 2019 he was awarded the prestigious Thomas Dehler Medal for his work advocating for freedom of speech and the rule of law in Turkey.

The Law Society is deeply concerned by the indictment against Veysel Ok who has been charged with offences of “denigrating the Turkish judicial system” relating to comments he gave in an interview in 2015 where he expressed his views on the independence of the Turkish judiciary.

The Law Society will continue to monitor the case against Veysel Ok and other lawyers in Turkey who have been indicted, arrested and detained.

The full letter can be found on the right hand-side of this webpage.
