The Law Society has published a practice note covering best practice for managing file closure at the termination of a matter, and the need to manage risks inherent in the mismanagement of file administration, particularly leaving a file open when it is ready for closure. An important element of your systems for managing risk should be effective and clear processes and procedures, reviewed regularly, for the prompt and efficient closure of a file, including digitally stored data, at the termination of a matter. This will also be an important element of your systems for managing risk and will help to satisfy the outcomes set out in Chapter 7 of the SRA Code of Conduct.
