June 2017

Welcome to the Junior Lawyers Division newsletter, the first since our annual conference in April.

I would like to thank everyone who gave up their time on a Saturday to speak at the conference and also the JLD committee for their hard work in planning and running the event. There was certainly a very active committee WhatsApp that day!

I am particularly pleased to say that our annual conference trended on Twitter, despite the Grand National taking place on the same day. Our ball and charity raffle was held the same evening and, thanks to the generous prizes donated, we raised over £1,000 for Winston's Wish, a charity that supports bereaved children.

We have been working on the results of our resilience and wellbeing survey and engaging in talks with the Law Society on guidance and best practice for the profession. We will publish more information on this shortly.

Finally, we are continuing to challenge the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) on their proposed changes to the solicitor qualifying routes. Their latest consultation outlines how they intend to implement the solicitors qualifying exam and how they anticipate governing qualified lawyers transferring from other jurisdictions and other branches of the legal profession. Unfortunately there is still no information on the anticipated costs of such a programme.

We want to represent you so please let us know your views and concerns so we can speak out on your behalf.
