JLD Update newsletter August 2015

August 2015

Max Harris

The summer can be as busy a time as ever, and that has certainly been the case for us at the JLD. Some of the things we have been working on since our last update include:

Voluntary code for recruitment of trainee solicitors
In April, the SRA withdrew its signature from the voluntary code for recruitment of trainee solicitors (which provides a set of unenforceable good practice principles for trainee recruitment). I said in my April update that the JLD was working closely with the remaining signatories to modernise the code and potentially seek a replacement signatory.

I am delighted to announce that the Law Society has become a signatory to the code. This means that the current signatories are the JLD, the Law Society, the Association of Graduate Recruiters and the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services. The signatories have also announced an update to the code, to reflect modern recruitment practices.

Equivalent means
In July 2014, the SRA introduced a new route to qualification which allows paralegals who have done the equivalent to the legal practice course, professional skills course, and training contract to qualify as a solicitor. Robert Houchill, the first paralegal to qualify as a solicitor by this route, has provided an overview of this route and some helpful tips.

JLD Executive Committee
Thank you to all who participated in the recent Law Society Council elections. I am pleased to announce that the two new JLD Council members are Matthew Allan (representing LPC students and trainee solicitors) and Kayleigh Leonie (representing solicitors 0-5 years' PQE). Their profiles can be found on the JLD website.

I also provide my sincere thanks to Emma Dickinson and Catherine Melis, whose terms on the Law Society Council have now come to an end. Both Emma and Catherine were, and remain, fantastic advocates for the legal profession.

Nominations for positions on the JLD Executive Committee will be opening in early September. We will be posting further information about the vacancies on our website closer to the time.

As always, please feel free to get in touch with us at juniorlawyers@lawsociety.org.uk or one of our social media channels.

Chair, Junior Lawyers Division of the Law Society

Our consultation responses

  • The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills published a consultation on postgraduate study, student loans and other support. In June, the JLD responded to the consultation paper as there are clear implications for those considering a career in law.

  • The SRA published a consultation paper setting out a range of regulatory reforms, which included a question on whether the SRA should enable qualification as a solicitor through an apprenticeship route.
