On Monday 13 July President Jonathan Smithers welcomed the Italian Minister of Justice, Andrea Orlando, to the Law Society.

More than a hundred lawyers gathered to listen to Minister Orlando’s detailed presentation of his reform of the Italian civil justice system which aims, among other things, to make Italy a more competitive destination for foreign investment.

Minister Orlando discussed both short term interventions as well as commitments to a more systematic reform of the civil justice system. As part of the progress made so far, he mentioned the reduction in the amount of time required to reduce backlog cases, halving the amount of such cases, a complete digitalisation of information and other innovative changes to the judicial system. Finally the Minister highlighted the creation of specialised business courts and a fast track for foreign investors, which provide quicker turnarounds for the settlement of business litigation.
