The Law Society has written to the President of Syria to express concern for the continuing persecution against the founders and certain staff of Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM). It is understood that on 16 February 2012, SCM’s Damascus were raided by a unit of the Syrian intelligence forces and that a large number of staff, including the founder Mazen Darwish, were arrested and detained. It is understood that Mr Darwish and four other staff members, namely Hussein Gharir, Hani Zaitani, Mansour Omari, and Abdul Rahman Hamada were indicted. Currently Mazen Darwish, Hani Zaitani and Hussein Gharir remain in detention facing charges under the Syrian Anti-Terrorism Law.
