The Law Society is concerned about the indictment of Mr Andy Hall, a researcher into issues relating to the labour rights of migrants and a human rights defender. On 24 August 2014, Mr Hall was indicted under Article 14(1) of the Computer Crimes Act, which bans online material considered a threat to national security, and Article 328 of the Thai Criminal Code by Bangkok South Criminal Court. If convicted, he faces up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine of around 10.3 million Euros. Natural Fruit has filed four cases against Mr Hall following the publication of the report he researched for the Finnish NGO Finnwatch, released in January 2013 and titled “Cheap Has a High Price”.  The report alleged serious labour rights abuses by Natural Fruit in its factory in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and was based on information gathered through interviews with the workers and exposed violence against employees, forced overtime, the use of underage labour and the confiscation of passports of Burmese migrant workers.  Natural Fruit denies all allegations.
