The Law Society is concerned about the recent sedition charges against the lawyer N. Surendran in Malaysia. We are concerned that these charges, which led to the imprisoonment of the lawyer, might be intended to refrain the lawyer’s freedom of expression in the country and that the Sedition Act might be used with the intention to stop criticisms against the Government from members of the legal profession. For this reason, the Law Society respectfully urged the Government of Malaysia to dismiss the charges against N. Surendran and ensure that legal professionals are free to carry out their duties without threats or reprisals.
