The Law Society sent an intervention letter to the Chinese Premier to express its concern over the detention of the Chinese human rights lawyer Mr. Xia Lin, who was sentenced to a 12 years imprisonment on fraud charges. Mr. Xia Lin has worked on a number of high-profile human rights cases, including acting as a legal representative of the artist and activist Ai Weiwei, as well as human rights defender Guo Yushan, who was himself detained in 2014 after voicing support for pro-democracy street protests in Hong Kong. The Law Society respectfully urged the Government of China to release Mr. Xia Lin and to enable a free environment in which lawyers and human rights defenders can carry out their professional duties without fear of intimidation or reprisals.
