The Law Society is concerned for the safety and welfare of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Guatemala. We have been informed that there has been a significant increase in the number of HRDs at risk in the country, with statistics from the Unit for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Guatemala (UDEFEGUA) showing that in 2013 there were 657 cases of attacks against defenders, including 18 murders and 19 attempted murders. This number increased in 2014 to 810 cases of attacks, with 7 murders, 21 attempted murders and 30 cases of ill, cruel or inhuman treatment. This rise in numbers, is the highest since UDEFEGUA started recording data in 2000.
