The Australian legal services environment is very complex with eight different regulatory regimes across the country, however this is soon due to change as the two biggest jurisdictions, New South Wales and Victoria take up a harmonised regime towards the middle of 2013.

We will be working with our members to progress key issues of facilitating the movement of experienced layers globally, including through their Australian practices.

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the impact of and strategies to deal with the cuts across legal aid, an issue also of high priority to our Australian counterparts, as well as common challenges such as how to achieve appropriate levels of diversity in the profession.
