We participated in the 61st annual congress of the UIA in Toronto from 28-30 October
The UIA organised this year’s annual congress in Toronto, returning to Canada after 30 years.
The three day congress brought together lawyers and bar leaders, legal professionals, judges, and academics, from more than 120 countries.
In addition to the work of the numerous specialised commissions, three main topics were chosen for the congress:
- natural resource exploitation, as well as all their related problems, in the areas of human rights, environment law, real estate law, trade law, financial law, labour law and criminal law
- repairing the harm caused by terrorism, in order to determine those who are responsible and how victims should be compensated
- the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: an alternative form of dispute resolution in the event of inter-ethnic problems in national and international conflicts?
The Law Society also participated in the EU Law Commission and gave an update on Brexit, in particular how it might impact lawyers and discussed with other bar leaders what disciplinary rules should apply to lawyers exercising under mobility rules for lawyers.
