Many thanks to all delegates and participants from England and Wales and the CIS region for making the two days such success. Here is a summary with presentations and photos from the event.

On day 1 of the trade mission, managing partners and senior partners of top-tier Kazakh law firms had an opportunity to learn more about the ’nitty-gritty’ of doing legal business in England and Wales. Regional delegates had considerable international experience with specific interest in M&A, arbitration, financial services, capital and energy markets, real estate and construction. You can find the delegate brochure attached to this story.

To kick-off the visit, a roundtable discussion at the Law Society focussed on ‘financial services and energy markets: dispute resolution and regulatory issues from an England and Wales perspective’. Panellists from the largest law firms covered all aspects of legal business. The session was chaired by Sergei Ostrovsky, Partner, Head of Russia and CIS Practice, Ashurst. The panel included:

  • Sebastian Lawson, Partner, Freshfields
  • Maria Gritsenko, Counsel, Bryan Cave
  • Trevor Withane, Mishcon de Reya Solicitor
  • Nicholas Gardner, partner and  chartered tax adviser, Ashurst
  • Alex Foster, Senior Manager, Private Clients,  Ernst & Young LLP (UK)
  • Beenu Rudki, Senior Manager Immigration Specialist, Ernst & Young LLP (UK)

Follwing the session, Bryan Cave LLP kindly hosted the delegation for lunch at their premises.

On the same day, Central Asian delegates had one-to-one meetings with English and Welsh law firms that the Law Society organised based on the individual firms’ expertise and practice areas.

Day 2 coincided with our International Marketplace ‘Going global’ 2015 Annual conference. Delegates from five regions; Latin America, China, India, Africa and the CIS, and English and Welsh law firms had the opportunity to hear about international strategies, benefits gained from a membership of an international organisation and to network at the opening reception, lunch and coffee breaks intensively.

During the afternoon of Marketplace, our Kazakh delegation delivered an informative session on ‘doing legal business in Central Asia’. The panellist and audience were proactive with a lively discussion throughout. Speakers from the region shared their knowledge, expertise and experiences. The panel was chaired by Andrew Terry, partner and joint Head of CIS Practice Group, Withers Worldwide. The panellists were:

  • Otabek Suleymanov, Partner, Colibri Law Firm
  • Liza Zhumakhmetova, Partner, Signum Law Firm
  • Tair Nazkhanov, Managing Partner, Nazkhanov and Partners
