On 4 March, the Law Society hosted an afternoon seminar titled ‘Kazakhstan in Focus: the new Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) Court and International Arbitration Centre (IAC)’ in partnership with the Bar Council, the AIFC Court and IAC.

Christina Blacklaws, president of the Law Society opened and chaired the session with Lord Woolf, chief justice of AIFC Court, Barbara Dohmann QC, chair of the IAC, and Chris Campbell-Holt, chief executive and registrar of the AIFC Court and IAC.

The event was attended by a high-level delegation from the AIFC include Dr Kairat Kelimbetov, governor of the AIFC and Marat Aitenov, deputy CEO of the AIFC.

As part of the event, the Law Society signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the AIFC Court and IAC to cooperate and share best practices on English common law with our Kazakh colleagues, and work together to protect and strengthen the independence of the legal profession and rule of law in Kazakhstan.
