On 27 May 2016, the Law Society in partnership with the Kazakhstan Bar Association, UK Trade and Investment and the British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan co-organised English Law Day in Almaty. The event promoted legal links and business between both countries, the use of English law, and solicitors’ expertise.

The forum was well attended by over 120 guests of which included the Law Society’s President, Jonathan Smithers, top legal practitioners from England and Wales and Kazakhstan. The forum provided a valuable opportunity to discuss English law concepts, principles and practice in the areas of M&A transactions, capital markets, project finance and PPP, and international arbitration.

According to participants, the high quality of speakers and moderators and the interactive discussions made the conference a great success. In attachment, you can view the full  presentations from the conference.

The forum also aimed to strengthen the relationship between legal practitioners from both countries.

As part of the visit to Almaty, Jonathan Smithers participated in a roundtable discussion with the Kazakhstan Bar Association and Republican Collegium of Advocates on regulation of the legal profession in Kazakhstan on 26 May. Jonathan Smithers, gave a speech on the different forms of legal practice in England and Wales and the importance of an independent legal profession.

We would like to say special thank you to our speakers and moderators who helped make this event a success.
