Jointly with the Observatory for Lawyers in Danger, Lawyers for Lawyers, European Association of Lawyers for Democracy & World Human Rights and German Bar Association (Deutscher Anwaltverein, DAV), the Law Society is organising a conference in Berlin on the efficiency of ECHR remedies in cases concerning events related to the failed coup and the state of emergency in Turkey.

This outstanding event is arranged to highlight the pressure under which the Strasbourg Court is operating and to discuss the crucial questions as follows:

  • Does the Court provide an effective remedy to the citizens of Turkey in applications concerning the events relating to the attempted coup and the subsequent declaration of a state of emergency?
  • Should the Court adopt a different approach, and if so, what should it be?

The raised questions concern the effectiveness of ECHR as a regional human rights system that safeguards fundamental rights and freedoms in Europe. The following panel of distinguished speakers is invited to discuss these highly important issues:

  • Rıza Türmen (former Turkish judge at the ECHR)
  • Michael O’Boyle (Former Deputy Registrar of the ECHR)
  • Professor Başak Çalı (Hertie School of Governance, Center for Global Public Law, Koç University Istanbul)
  • Piers Gardner (Monckton Chambers, ECHR-Specialist)
  • Professor Françoise Hampson (University of Essex)
