For the last three and a half years the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales has, along with lawyers from a number of other countries in the EU and the US, been observing the trial of 45 mainly Kurdish lawyers who have been on trial in Istanbul, Turkey. In November 2011 mass arrests of Kurdish and Turkish lawyers took place in raids carried out simultaneously in many Turkish cities and provinces. The lawyers have been charged with terrorist offences related to their representation of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the PKK.
