The president of the Supreme Court delivered a speech on the fundamental importance of having independent advocates in a modern civilised, democratic society.

In an address to the Independent Council of Advocates and Barristers on 16 April 2016, Lord Neuberger reflected on the challenges facing the practice of law, advancing technologies and fees, the constitutional importance to the rule of law of honest, expert, respected and independent lawyers and the need for affordable legal advice and representation.

Independent advocates are, he commented, a precious asset and vital component to a modern civilised society.
