We teamed up with the Bar Council of England and Wales, the Russian Federal Chambers of Lawyers, the Moscow Chamber of Advocates, the St Petersburg Chamber of Advocates, the British-Russian Lawyers’ Association and the Anglo-Russian Lawyers’ Association, to promote legal links and business between both countries, the use of English Law, our members expertise, and to strengthen the relationship between practitioners from both jurisdictions.

Among the distinguished representatives of our organisations and supporters were Jonathan Smithers, President of the Law Society of England and Wales; Alistair MacDonald QC, Chairman of the Bar Council of England and Wales; Igor Polyakov, President of the Moscow Chamber of Advocates; John Lindfield, Head of UK Trade & Investment Russia and Jonathan Brenton, Minister Counsellor (Prosperity) at the British Embassy in Moscow.

With more than 260 registered delegates from the UK, Russia, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, attendees had a great opportunity to discuss the recent developments in English Law and the current business environment for doing legal business in the UK and Russia. The conference included high profile discussions on the following topics:

  • The relevance of English law to Russian businesses in 2015 and beyond;
  • Corporate Governance;
  • Recovering assets through bankruptcy and liquidation;
  • Enforcing debts through the English Courts; and
  • Managing complex international disputes.

According to participants, the high quality of speakers and moderators and the interactive panel discussions of case study sessions and role plays made the conference a great success. In attachment, you can view the full programme.

Delegates had excellent opportunities to build their profile and network throughout the three days but perhaps the most prominent evening remains the opening reception of the conference hosted by Tim Barrow CMG LVO MBE, Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation, at his Residence in Moscow.

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity for the Law Society President and Policy Advisers to meet with member firms, the President of the Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers, the President of the Moscow Chamber of Advocates and the Russian Ministry of Justice to discuss key issues.

We would like to say special thank you to our session and associate sponsors (Faegre Baker Daniels, George Z. Georgiou & Associates, Grant Thornton, Lidings and 3 Hare Court) and media partners (Russian Arbitration Association and CIS Arbitration Forum) as we would not be able to organise this event without their support.
