The High Court has approved an upwardly revised costs budget after finding that extra disclosure demands constituted a ‘significant development’ in the case.

Master Davison approved the increase in Al-Najar & Ors v The Cumberland Hotel (London) [2018] EWHC 3532 (QB), after lawyers acting for the claimants were given double the number of documents they had been expecting.

The budget will therefore rise 78 per cent to £111,811 – an increase mostly accounted for by extra solicitor hours and a doubling of the figure allowed for counsel. A proposed eight-fold increase in expert fees, from £1,440 to £9,000, was reduced to no more than £2,880.
