September welcomed the International Weekend for 2019, an annual event where the European Young Bar Association (EYBA), the Young Barristers’ Committee of the Bar Council (YBC) the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) and the London Young Lawyers Group (LYLG) join forces to welcome junior lawyers from all around the world to London.

The weekend got off to a bang on the evening of 26 September when the LYLG hosted drinks for all our international guests at The Curtain in Shoreditch. This welcome reception was a great opportunity for delegates to shake off their jet lag and get to meet their international colleagues from across the globe in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Friday daytime saw the delegates attend the Courts of England and Wales. The day started with a Tour of the Commercial Court including a very informative talk by the Chancellor of the High Court, Sir Geoffrey Vos.

Delegates took a break for lunch at the incredible and impressive Cheshire Cheese Pub, famed for having such historic patrons as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Samuel Johnson. The afternoon then continued with an informative tour of the Central London County Court followed by a talk from a sitting judge.

Friday night gave the delegates a chance to discuss the day and further network while letting their hair down at a fantastic fine wine tasting hosted at Dynamic Vines - a private cellar under the railway arches.

Saturday saw the forum schedule get underway with highly informative and engaging sessions presented by experts in their fields. Among the topics discussed were;

  • Bullying and harassment in the workplace - a thought-provoking session saw delegates given various scenarios and asked to determine if the facts amounted to bullying and sexual harassment by Beatriz Martinez.
  • 100 years of Woman in Practice – a discussion of the historical progression of women in the profession and the ongoing challenges faced today by Lucinda Acland.
  • Cross Border work - an informative panel discussion with tips for how legal professionals can expand overseas with their practice. On the panel was Hugh Mercer QC, Sarah Vasani, Brian Kotick and Andrea Stauber.

The day ended with the International Oratory competition when delegates battled it out over a five minute presentation each, on various topics. The winner walked away with a voucher, kindly presented by TM Lewin.

In true International Weekend style, the weekend drew to a close at a gala dinner hosted at the Law Society in the magnificent Common Room. There was dancing aplenty into the early hours of the morning with a great time had by all.

Sunday drew the weekend to a conclusion with the EYBA holding their general meeting. This was an opportunity for them to provide an update to their members on the Association’s finances, administrative items and action points for the forthcoming year.

The weekend was a huge success and a great opportunity to network with junior lawyers from around the world. A good time was had by all those who attended.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide a huge thank you to all of the speakers who gave up their valuable time and shared their insights and expertise. International Weekend wouldn’t have been possible without you.
