On 24th November The Law Society hosted the ILFA Gala Dinner, celebrating the close of ILFA’s 2016 secondment programme.

This year 22 young lawyers from across Africa spent three months at law firms and companies in London and Dubai.

An “inspiring” experience

The ILFA programme enables participants to further their professional development and expand their networks. Placements cover a range of industries and practice areas, including mining, construction, banking and finance.

Speaking about his ILFA experience, Olawale Ajetunmobi, a senior associate at Nigerian firm Perchstone & Graeys, said: “The ILFA programme is a lifetime opportunity in my professional career and life pursuit. The advanced training sessions provided by the leading law firms were not only comprehensive on the different practice areas, but also afforded me the opportunity to interact with the firms on the nature and demands of a successful international practice.”

Olawale says his time with Pinsent Masons’ Energy and Infrastructure team “provided me with invaluable and world-class insight and understanding of the structuring, issues, risks allocation and agreements” in the sector.

For host firms and companies, the programme provides an important opportunity to develop business and partnerships in African markets.

Celebrating a successful programme

The Gala Dinner was attended by over 150 guests, including representatives and partners of the host firms, The Law Society and ILFA.

We were honoured to welcome Meaza Ashenafi, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, lawyer and prominent women’s rights activist in Ethiopia, who delivered an inspiring keynote address about her work, including founding the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association.

2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of ILFA. To learn more about the organisation and its secondment programme, please visit http://www.ilfa.org.uk/home.
