Traditionally in-house lawyers have had a long-distance relationship with the SRA but this is no longer possible. Recent changes in the law, and with the introduction of the SRA Handbook, mean that in-house practice is of greater interest to the regulator than ever before and ignorance of compliance requirements is a risky position to sustain.

Not only does the Legal Services Act focus on the provision of legal services to consumers, with new demands for those lawyers and others providing reserved legal activities and pro bono services to members of the public, but also the SRA is dealing with two projects to review in-house practice generally and also to add legislative requirements about “special bodies”, in which many in-house lawyers work, to the SRA Handbook.
