Junior Lawyers Division

October 2017

It's been a busy time for the JLD. We held two well-attended events - the LPC student forum and the junior lawyer career development forum - at the Law Society, and co-hosted the annual International Weekend with our counterparts at the Bar and in Europe.

The International Weekend saw attendees from the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, France and of course the UK convene in London for a two-day legal and educational programme. As one international guest so eloquently put it: 'your country's reputation has taken a battering' as a result of Brexit. It's therefore even more important that we, as junior lawyers, continue to promote England and Wales and our legal system as the jurisdiction of choice for international disputes and business transactions.

We're extremely grateful to all our event speakers for giving up their weekend to share their tips, advice, knowledge and experience, and to those on the organising committees for their hard work in delivering these events.

We continue to lobby the Solicitors Regulation Authority on their proposals to introduce the Solicitors Qualifying Exam, and will be responding to their latest consultation on the transitional arrangements. All feedback from the JLD network and individual members is welcome - please email juniorlawyers@lawsociety.org.uk with any comments on the consultation.

Finally, this is my last newsletter as chair of the JLD committee. It has been a pleasure representing our members and the JLD. The election process for our 2018 committee is now underway and you have until 18 October to submit your nomination. I would strongly recommend getting involved with the JLD executive committee, it is a thoroughly rewarding experience.
