Law Society recommends minimum salary for trainee solicitors
On 11 November 2015, the Law Society announced a recommended minimum salary for all trainee solicitors in England and Wales. We are delighted that this JLD initiative has been successful. The JLD welcomes the Law Society's introduction of the recommended minimum salary for trainee solicitors, and considers it a huge step forward for social mobility in the legal profession. It is of utmost importance that as a profession we ensure access is open to all, regardless of background. By adhering to at least the Law Society's recommended minimum salary, firms will encourage better access.
JLD outlines concerns over SRA proposal to reform the solicitor qualification route
The SRA has over the past few months begun pre-consultation discussions on a proposed reform of the process to qualify as a solicitor. While a formal consultation is expected later this year, the JLD has noted the SRA's intention that this will focus on its preferred option of a common professional assessment.
The JLD wrote an open letter to the SRA on 3 November outlining our concerns with the current proposals, along with a recommendation of how to address these concerns.

Equivalent means FAQ
In July 2014, the SRA introduced a new route to qualification which allows paralegals to qualify as a solicitor if they have done the equivalent to the legal practice course, professional skills course, and training contract.
We are pleased to announce the release of an equivalent means FAQ, drafted with the assistance of the SRA.
