Welcome to the first Junior Lawyer Update of 2017 and my first newsletter as chair of the Junior Lawyers Division.
I would like to thank the outgoing JLD committee - Ben Fraser, Jonathan Smith and Brogan Solomon - for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the JLD and representing junior lawyers. Also, to 2016's chair Leanne Maund, who undertook an incredible amount of work for the JLD, especially regarding the proposed Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE).
Last year was busy for the JLD. We responded to multiple consultations that will have implications for our members, including the SRA consultations on the SQE and the Competition and Markets Authority legal services study . We held two career development forums aimed at trainee and junior solicitors, and two forums for students seeking training positions. Our annual conference was a huge success, with sessions on Brexit, working with vulnerable clients and developing an international career.
I would like to welcome the new JLD committee 2016-17 . I am pleased that the 2017 committee is made up of representatives from across England and Wales, from Newcastle to Southampton. It is dedicated to representing the interests of our members and looking forward to the year ahead.
Our focus for this year includes:
We want to represent your views as our members throughout our term on the committee. Please let us know your views and concerns so we can speak out on your behalf.
