Melbourne has secured dates for the prestigious 20th Commonwealth Law Conference in March 2017, to be hosted by the Law Institute of Victoria.

LIV President Steven Sapountsis said the conference will bring over 200 international and local speakers and about 1000 legal professionals to Melbourne for this congress to be held from 19 to 23 March 2017.

The conference theme is “Thriving in a complex world: building on the rule of law” and it will be based at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

The conference will be divided into four streams: corporate and commercial law; legal and judicial profession; constitutionalism, human rights and the rule of law and contemporary legal topics.

Mr Sapountsis said Melbourne had experience with this event, which was last hosted by the LIV, with the support of the Law Council of Australia in 2003. “We are looking forward to showcasing our local legal profession and learning from the experience of other jurisdictions, in a rapidly changing legal environment,” Mr Sapountsis said.

Alexander Ward, Commonwealth Lawyers Association President, said “We are delighted to be returning to Melbourne for our 20th Commonwealth Law Conference which unites members of our profession and facilitates dialogue on common areas of concern. In a world of rapid change it is important to recognize the human contribution to progress and the strong bonds within our profession which are the catalyst for change.”
