Read about our successful fifth Russian Law Week conference in London.
The Law Society in partnership with the Bar Council, Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers, the Moscow Chamber of Advocates, the St Petersburg Chamber of Advocates, the Anglo-Russian Law Association, and the British Russian Law Association organised the fifth Russian Law Week conference in London from 12 – 14 November 2018.
The theme of this year’s conference was Legal Dialogue Без границ (Legal dialogue without borders). The first day of the conference was opened by our president, Christina Blacklaws, and Konstantin Dobrynin, state secretary of the Russian Federal Chamber of Lawyers, who both stressed the importance of international cooperation between lawyers from the UK and Russia.
Day one of the conference began with an interesting panel discussion on the future of law firms in Russia: opportunities and challenges for Russian and international law firms. The session was followed by presentations and discussions on legal development in fintech, changes in bankruptcy regulation in Russia and arbitration reform in Russia.
Day two of the conference began with a discussion on soft skills for the 2020s – what characteristics would distinguish the best lawyers for the future? This was followed by a case study on Ethics in international arbitration in an Anglo-Russian context. The last session for which we had a packed room was on sanctions, anti-sanctions and their economics and legal effects.
This year, we also enhanced the programme with the addition of a third day, which included two roundtable discussion sessions on busting the trust and tax and financial aspects of structuring Russian capital abroad.
The fifth Russian Law Week conference in London was a resounding success. We had excellent speakers and moderators. The three-day conference provided a unique opportunity for UK and Russian legal practitioners to discuss recent changes in Russian law and to foster new business relationships.
