The Republic of Azerbaijan is a transcontinental country in the Caucasus region. It is surrounded by the Caspian Sea, Russia, Armenia, Georgia and Iran. Its capital is Baku. The country proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and became the first Muslim-majority unitary constitutional presidential republic. The country is a member state of the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the NATO Partnership for Peace programme. The total GDP is USD87.763 billion and the official currency is the ‘manat’.
