The Law Society of England and Wales sent a letter to the President of Guatemala regarding the recent attacks to the human rights lawyer Mr. Pedro Rafael Maldonado Flores.

We understand that Mr. Maldonado Flores has been subjected to acts of intimidation, smear campaigns and judicial harrassment since 2013 and they continued despite the protection measures granted by the Ministry of Interior in 2015. In the recent attacks, gunshots were fired against a vehicle parked close to Mr. Maldonado Flores’ house in Guatemala City.

Mr. Maldonado Flores works for the organisation Centro de Accion Legal Ambiental y Social de Guatemala (CALAS) and we understand that other members of the organisation have been subject to attacks and intimidation in the recent past. For this reason, the Law Society remains concerned over these incidents and urges the Government of Guatemala to take action to protect lawyers and human rights defenders in the country.
