The Law Society is concerned for the Human Rights Defenders, Leyla and Arif Yunus. Leyla Yunus is the director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD). Her husband Arif is a historian and the head of the IPD conflictology department.

Leyla and Arif Yunus have published several articles exposing human rights violations. They have consistently raised awareness of human rights issues in Azerbaijan with foreign NGOs, governments, international sport committees, and reporters. This includes significant work to support the work of lawyers and legal work in Azerbaijan, including campaigns in relation to tenancy rights, right of fair trials and representation, and the settlement of international conflicts. Leyla and Arif Yunus are well-known figures in Azerbaijan and it has been widely reported that they have been harassed, arrested, interrogated and charged with offences and detained due to their human rights activism.
