The Law Society is concerned about the position of Ms Ghada Jamsheer, a prominent women’s rights defender in Bahrain. She is head of the Women’s Petition Committee, which campaigns on family law issues, and an author and blogger.

It is reported that Ms Jamsheer has been subjected to harassment for several years as a consequence of her human rights activities: in 2005 she was the subject of three charges of defamation which were later dropped; in 2006 she was reportedly subjected to surveillance; in 2007 Bahraini media outlets were ordered not to publish any news article about Ms Jamsheer and her access to the media was curtailed; in 2008 her home was searched by a state security agent while she was attending a women’s rights conference in South Africa and she and her family received threats and abuse.
