Pakistan: Shahbaz Gormani – Lawyer at risk

The Law Society is concerned to learn of the attack carried out against Mr Shahbaz Gormani, a lawyer in Lahore. We understand that Mr Shahbaz Gormani is the defence counsel for Mr Junaid Hafeez, a University lecturer facing charges of blasphemy. We are concerned to learn that Mr Gormani’s predecessor, Mr Rashid Rehman was killed earlier this year on 7 May 2014, whilst representing Mr Hafeez and that the cause of his death was that he had undertaken the representation of Mr Hafeez.

The Law Society is concerned for Vitaly Cherkasov, a human rights lawyer and member of the Interregional Association of Human Rights Organisations “Agora” which provides legal aid to individuals and non-governmental organisations. The lawyers at Agora have been involved in defending the rights of LGBTI activists and Vitaly Cherkasov was recently engaged to defend LGBTI activist Kirill Kaulgin. 

Mexico: Mario Luna Romero – Lawyer at Risk

The Law Society is concerned for Mario Luna Romero, a Human Rights defender and Tribal Secretary of the Yaqui in Sonara State, Northwest Mexico.  He plays an important role as spokesperson for the Yuqui community in the ongoing consultation process ordered by the Supreme Court on 8 May 2013 in relation to the construction of the Independence Aqueduct. The Supreme Court found on 8 May 2013 that the Yaqui tribe had a right to be consulted in the granting of the Environmental Impact Authorisation .
