Seminar on Freedom of Expression

To mark international Human Rights Day and to coincide with European Lawyers Day on 10 December the Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Council will be holding a joint seminar on Freedom of Expression.

The seminar will focus on FoE in particular in relation to:

  • the increasing number of lawyers and human rights defenders around the globe who are facing politically motivated prosecutions, unfair trials, wrongful convictions and arbitrary detention for peacefully exercising freedom of expression in the course of carrying out their professional responsibilities. 
  • This seminar will highlight and raise awareness to this worrying trend as well as recognize the great work of lawyers in this field

’The future of human rights’

This event will mark the closing of the Human Rights in Collaboration (HRiC) programme which saw events taking place throughout the UK to celebrate human rights.

The aim of the programme was to raise awareness and discussion about human rights across the legal community.  The programme included a wide variety of events in the form of seminars, symposia, panel discussions. Law firms, chambers and law schools held events to bring together practitioners, academics, law students and civil society.’The future of human rights’ will be the last event in the programme and we will hear from a distinguished panel about their views on some of the key human rights issues discussed.

Carol Service and reception:

The Law Society is holding a carol service at Temple Church on Thursday 10 December followed by a drinks and reception at Chancery Lane to mark International Human Rights Day.  There will be readings from The Rt. Hon. Lord Thomas, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and The Rt. Hon. Baroness Hale of Richmond CBE PC, a message from Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty and carol singing supported by the choir of our president Jonathan Smithers.  Andrea Coomber, director of JUSTICE will be presenting at the reception.  For further details and to book your place please click here.
